Von Bubblegums und Schildern

Nach der ersten Nacht auf dem Weg nach Edmonton, und wir wollen doch in 7 Tagen noch über 3000km zurücklegen um in Chicago zu sein und vor uns liegen noch einige wichtige Meilensteine, fährt sich unser Motorhome plötzlich sehr schlecht. Es springt auf und ab und gibt interessante Geräusche von sich. Zuerst denken wir an die amerikanischen, springenden Kult-Autos mit gut untermalter Soundkulisse, doch der wild gestikulierende Gegenverkehr verrät uns, dass irgendetwas nicht stimmt.

So halten wir rasch möglichst an und erkennen die Wurzel des Übels: ein Bubble! Ein Mooonsterbubble in unserem Gummireifen – sozusagen ein Bubble-Gum (auch der spätere Garagist hat in seiner Laufbahn keinen solchen Bubble gesehen – wir sind stolz auf unseren Bubble) in unserem linken Hinterreifen ragt 20cm hervor und droht jede Sekunde lautstark zu platzen. Doch wir haben Glück im Unglück, denn nach langen Tagen in mitten der Wildnis sind wir heute genau in der Nähe der kleinen City Watson Lake und schaffen es gerade noch in die nur 4km entfernte Reifengarage (wobei 4km mit kaputtem Reifen eeeelend lang sein können….).

Nach dem Zwischenstopp und freundlicher Hilfe von Marcus, dem Reifenspezialisten, der gerne mit uns auf unserem Trip mitfahren würde, und ein wenig erleichtertem Reisebudget machen wir einen Abstecher zu dem Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, welcher wir schon auf dem Hinweg bewundert haben, und kreieren ein eigenes Schild unter 1000enden.

Nach 4 Stunden Gemale und Gebastel hängen wir das Schild in der Mitte des Forest nach einer kleinen Brücke rechts vom Visitor Center an einem (noch) einsamen Baum auf. Wir sind gespannt auf die nächste Person, die unser Schild entdeckt und fotografiert 😉

Danach begeben wir uns auf den Weg nach Edmonton, wo Lasha & Norman mit ihrem Hund Koda, die wir auf dem Hinweg nach Alaska getroffen haben (siehe vorherigen Bericht „Von Scherben und schwarzen Zehen“ vom 08.07.2015), uns erwarten. Zu ihrem Dank nun folgende Zeilen auf Englisch:

We arrived in the afternoon in Edmonton and were warmly welcomed in the house of Lasha & Norman & their dog Koda. Norman, a former firefighter, did not overpromise and gave us good power for our motorhome (fridge, air conditioning, etc.) and tasty Alberta-water.
After a tasteful dinner and a deep sleep, Lasha & Norman showed us around in Edmonton the next day. Koda had to wait at home this time. We went into the most modern Visitor Center, we’ve ever seen and saw a wonderful short movie on a 3D Screen going around the movie theatre about Edmonton’s and Alberta’s history. In the end, we were spectators in the first moving hologram we’ve seen. In the evening, we went to an open air festival near their home and met also Diane. As all of them had visited Switzerland, we had a good start into our conversation.



The next day, we got some great ideas where to drive and go from Lasha & Norman and they also gave us their – already paid – national park card, so we could go for free into the Jasper & Banff nationalparks the upcoming days.
But first, we for sure needed to spend some time in the world’s biggest shopping mall in Edmonton. We ate our lunch there and were amused by the attractions which can be found inside the mall: rollercoaster park, swimming area (similar to Alpamare), ice hockey field, cinema, and for sure shops for everyone.

Later that day, we were heading towards Jasper, where our idea was to enter the nationalpark. The cute town Jasper gave us an impression of the beauty of the nationalpark, and we were not disappointed. We came into a beautiful scenery full of nature.
We strongly wanted to visit the – from Lasha & Norman suggested – two lakes “Lake Louise” and “Lake Moraine” – and they both were tremendous. Finally, we also spend couple of hours in Banff and enjoyed the hot weather there while having lunch on the roof top of a restaurant.

And like a wonder, we saw Adrian suddenly three times?!

After that great experience in nature, we headed towards Calgary, where we hoped to visit Family Cole. As they love to travel too, we were unfortunate and they were not in Calgary these days, but in Vancouver and also Ontario. So, we decided to spend half a day in Calgary to watch the festival there and to walk through the amazing town and the state park at the river.

After a sound sleep out of town, our journey to Eastern Canada has begun. We have 5 days and nearly 3000km to go, until Yvette’s cousin Nadine will arrive in Chicago and where we will pick her up – we were hoping for no other tire bubble or similar.
